Quote:"Auxiliaries of a Cohors Equitata in action, Northern Britain c.118AD. Although it seems to me the action is pretty much over...

Is that this one?:

I always thought it was supposed to represent Mons Graupius!

Anyway, book ordered, so soon I will know all...

That's the one Nathan,

It shows the spot of bother the Romans had - just before they decided to build a bloody big wall across the country.

Nathan, Andrew,

it was my favorite one, too, and a big inspiration for a diorama:

Not with those helmets! As far as we know anyway. Mons Graupius was a couple of decades prior to the Dacian wars, when cross braces were probably introduced.

Ah, quite so! I confess I was going more on the scenery, which looks very 'Scots highlands' (a bit too 'highlands' really, for Graupius, come to think of it...) - more likely Brigantian Cumbia, I suppose.

Scalping him, I reckon Confusedhock: - a more portable sort of trophy than the full severed head. These must be very 'barbaric' auxiliaries!

One of the best things about McBride is the amount of character he puts into his scenes - those soldiers look genuinely exhausted, having fought all the way up the hill. The centurion is, I guess, calling to the cavalry to pursue the fugitives, although the horsemen themselves look to have had an easier time of things - he could just as well be making a rude gesture at them - "Where were you ten minutes ago??" The legions started becoming "foreign legions" at the time.
It could be a man of Skythian origin collecting trofies (aka scalps.)
Kind regards
