Roman Ghost Stories?
#31
Quote:Thats the one,the plumbers story. There is also a tale of Ghostly Legions walking across Wheeldale Moor in Yorkshire, the story goes that they were on their way south and entered Wheeldale Moor and were never seen again. They are supposed to have been swallowed up by the Bog.Its part of a walk across the North Yorkshire Moors called the Lyke Wake Walk. And have been heard and seen from time to time.
I have heard about roman ghosts walking into the sea . I do not recall hearing about this one? Do you have more info?? Flavia

I still maintain the Roman ghosts were probably more shocked at the sight of the plumber who eventually turned up 2000 years on
I love your quote about the nut holding its ground. I guess ghosts can see us?? There are so many theories about what a ghost is? What is you theory? Flavia Is this the proper way to reply to your quote or is there some other way on this site I don't know how to do?? Flavia

Good luck. I say this because the Romans had a very different view of the living and the dead than we do. It seems that to them the so called spirits of the dead were never that far away. They could help or hinder ones everyday life. They were often worshipped, or at least prayed to. Sorry for the sweeping generalizations. A "visit" from a dead ancestor was a not uncommon motif amongst the romans.

The atomists, such as Lucretius explained "ghosts" in terms of atoms (De rerum natura IV, 45f, 84f, 721f).

A specific "ghost story" in the modern sense can be found in one of the leters of Pliny, letter VII, 27. Pliny's may be the best known example. This is probably the closest to what you are looking for.

Someone else, can not remember who, may be the satirist Lucian, has a number of "ghost" stories.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply!!I still am not sure how to use this site to reply to people. It fascinates me that the romans saw and recorded ghosts also. Italy was supposed to be a very haunted country but the ghosts were exorcised over the centuries? The coliseum is supposed to be one of the most haunted sites but when I was in Rome I sure didn't want to linger in the ruins on the Palatine hill and they just gave me the creeps. Flavia

Quote:There's a "mysterious force" in Suetonius' Life of Augustus, 6.

Quote:No one ventures to enter this room except of necessity and after purification, since there is a conviction of long-standing that those who approach it without ceremony are seized with shuddering and terror; and what is more, this has recently been shown to be true. For when a new owner, either by chance or to test the matter, went to bed in that room, it came to pass that, after a very few hours of the night, he was thrown out by a sudden mysterious force, and was found bedclothes and all half-dead before the door.
(Loeb Translation) Hi I'm fascinated by the fact ghosts have been around for so long! What do you think they consist of?? Flavia

*edit - anybody know why the link won't post correctly?*

Thanks for replying My ghost is also from York. I had a painting done of a roman soldier by a man who was born in York when his 92 year old father saw the painting he said I used to talk to one of them in my bedroom when I was a child. He apparently asked the soldier what his sword was called and the reply came back "Jani"I presume a form of Janus the god of portals, life death etc What do you think??
I am very interested in ghosts and the paranormal (started the ghostly Romans thread) and your story is fascinating.
I wonder if this soldier is related to a previous incarnation, or possibly he guided the artist to portray him, to let you know he was still there?
I have certain reactions in some areas of York, connected to the Romans, possibly due to a past life experience...although I love the city.

Hi Sorry it has take me so long to reply. I'm still not sure how to post a reply correctly on this site. What is York like as a city? Of all the roman sited in england, york fascinates me the most! Is it a mysterious city for you because of your reactions when there?? Flavia

Apparently you can still shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow if sighted within the city walls after nightfall (or midnight). Same with Chester and Welshmen.

Or so I'm told...

the way I felt whilst in the cellar was as though I had been breathing helium gas - along with shakiness, a sense of a strong spiritual presence closeby maybe.
York is a very mysterious city where you can feel very close to the past at times, but some of my reactions are not always pleasant and I was told that the Romans were not very pleasant to me in a lifetime there, I don't know who I was or what I did though or exactly what time period it was....
So much of it is old and I will walk into shops simply to look at the ancient beams and walls and wander down the snickleways to see what I haven't noticed or forgotten. You have to watch the geese though, I fed them by the Merchant Adventurer's Hall one day, tried to leave and found myself being escorted along the path by honking feathered beings Confusedhock:
It happened somewhere else recently...
I think I was also a goosegirl in a past life.....!

Hi The more I hear of York the more I want to see it , to feel it. I felt that way in Pompeii we went into a house caLLED THE HOUSE OF THE CRYPTOPORTICUS(a barrel domed place) and inside there were the casts of two women who had died together bodies entwined and a man also. I had to get OUT. Everywhere in that city you could sense, no feel, something there. You seem sensitive to these things as well and a few lucky (I guess) ones are. In my own home my 37 year old son only told me 2 years ago that he saw an old lady in our front bedroom when he was a child. He said she was sitting ona bed looking out a window. I only told him then that I had seen her in the hall three timesand that was her bedroom and she had died in the hall. His great uncle was killed in a car accident on a highway just out of town but the hill and corner were tamed only later. He was returning home one winter night when visibility was very poor and suddenly as he was rouding a corner he heard a voice either in this head or in the car saying get off the road. He obeyed and pulled to the right, just then a tanker truck came around the corner on his side. When he told me about it the next day I was shocked and told him that is the corner your great uncle died?? THen he was shocked!! Flavia aka Carolina

For a complete reference to magic, necromancy, demonology , miracles, etc.. in greek-latin literature , you can read "Arcana mundi" by G.Luck.

Hi and thanks for replying I will try to get a copy of the book. I like the verse you wrote at the end. What does Black Flag- I'm the one mean? Being from Italy you must know some ghost stories that would be in your traditions.Flavia aka Carolina
