"Barbarian" military equipment studies
#31
Wow!! Confusedhock: Confusedhock:
Beautiful indeed. Now I can see that a true late type 'nasal with eyebrows' was also attached to Agilulf's front plate!

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Yep, that's what these holes seem destined for.

Looking at Vort's "Ponto-Caucasian" post, I strongly suspect he is the happy owner of a book called "Armes et Guerriers Barbares" by Iaroslav Lebedynsky.
That makes two of us and it is a book I highly recommend for those of us that can read french. The emphasis is put on the asiatic --as opposed to Roman-- influences on "barbarian" --and roman-- military gear.
Amazing. You learn, among many other things that the typical IIIrd century AD scabbard slide was used all over the place, from Western Europe to China where examples made of jade were found dating from the Han dynasty...
Aaaahhh. Fashion... Big Grin
What else?
Ah yes. That reconstructed Alamannic warrior chief is absolutely awesome.

Hi Antonius,
No, Can't say I have that book (wish I would, though...). That b&w plate came from a French late Roman forum: [url:9fdzm00i]http://111935.aceboard.fr/111935-543-1252-0-casques-pontico-caucasiens.htm

My color pictures are from Fuchs, Karlheinz (ed.), et al (1997): Die Alamannen, Theiss Verlag, Stuttgart and Die Franken – Wegbereiter Europas. 5 bis 8 Jahrhundert nach Chr. Band 2. Katalog – Handbuch in zwei Teilen herausgegeben von Alfred Wieczorek, Patrick Pe’rin, Karin von Welck und Wilfried Menghin.

Vort..

The darn thing is outta stock at Amazon.fr. Sad
But get the book if you have a chance. Fascinating.
The BW plates from that french site were scanned from the book.
Lebedynsky specialises in steppe cultures. He also wrote books on the Scythians, the Sarmatians and the Alans and I think I'll indulge into investments there.. Big Grin
..And I suspect that the front plate of that alamannic helmet was not riveted. It seems the whole thing was held together with rawhide.

I have always like that helmet, and already have a lemellar cuirass that would work well with it. Deepeeka could probably make a copy of this, and would, if enough people expressed an interest in it.

That Said, how many people right now would order one if it was made well, and a reasonable price?

Incidentally, they did make me a very nice horn panel spangenhelm based on the one found under the Cologne cathredal. There wasn't much interest for this, but it may not have been advertised well, since a lot of dealers don't know that much about the subject.

Hi Dan,
If you want to know "how many people want...", you could start a new thread an mark the 'poll' option. Then people can very easily answer your question and the board will do the counting for you.
Greets!

Deepeka has to types of Sutton Hoo helmets one very bad, and the good one, which is:[url:2tlzdvng]http://www.deepeeka.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3700
I think this helmet is later than the 4th century, better fits the 5th onwards... Or earlier in Persian ranks.

The blue crest one soldier fits better the 5th or 6th.
