The Notitia Dignitatum. As long as no-one can prove to me why it would have been in use for cavalry (or gladiators) only, I see no problem to interpret the manica as in (continued) use for the infantry.

Not likely! I have the scutum there, plus it's not incresing the agility of my arm movements! I can sctratch my nose and draw my spatha, but already holding the hasta becomes strained.
