Right. Then dig a 2 meter deep ditch and berm, pitch tents and THEN gather wood for a cook fire. Not many would sign up for the second year...

Sure, kill all interest in the kids for Roman stuff. Be like those wankers who forced us to read ABSOLUTE GARBAGE (censored) like John Steinbeck in school and made so many people HATE reading. Ugh.

Years ago, there was a guy on here who had a topic on Roman Scouting... it was cool. Wish I could remember more or find it. Do cool BAD WORD CENSORED. Needle felt combat. Not pain, not unfun stuff -- at least at first.

Close order drill is always kinda interesting. Just depends on the kids though. If tou habe any knowledge on drill its always cool to see people go from clumbsy out of sync and dissorderly to all the same equal and move as a single unit. But this was a little different situation and by that I mean Marine corps boot camp...but next time you do this sounds like something you would want to incorporate. I could come down and help just pm me if you think this sounds like a good addition

The kids who did it had a good time, some of them even came for a second time, we did it really over the top. But fun for the kids was the main aspect.

OTOH, if it isn't fun, they certainly won't be back. Concessions must be made to fit the age and skill level of the kids. Otherwise, they'll be much less likely to approach our hobby later on when they get a little more foundation in history and culture.

I have a new class this fall. I will have 19 kids for two hours a week. To me if all I do is lecture I might as well give them a reading list and tell them to read at home. While there is room for traditional academic exercises involving them in practical experiences is better for the long term. I am excited about the forthcoming months. If these kids like it half as much as the summer group did I will be happy with it.

Good luck! I did something similar at Castle Cornet last year. I was formerly a teacher and ran with this activity at my former high school. However mine was just for three days and entitled Medieval mayhem. I had a very limited budget and must admit my wallet got raided rather heavily. It's possible the photos have now been removed but if you go to St Sampsons High School and medieval as a google search something should pop up. Make sure you have a range of activities. Something bookish doesn't hurt at all. Lots of craft activities, I had wattle and daub, cooking on an open fire and all that entails, games, a team game of stool ball, plus as we were at the castle had them doing LH demos to the public (using my armour, medical kit and so on). The clothing (some made by them) was awful but the enthusiasm was great! We even had a rather large group of tourists from a cruise liner turn up and the guide had two of the students miked up!

As for your activities, you can't beat drill, anything competitive and physical, the surveying one sounds great, have a game for them to play, some form of cooking, something involving a craft(eg the mosaics) get dirty with some daub! (Do have disposable aprons and gloves to hand). Also have some puzzles (maybe using Roman numerals, possible translation puzzles and what have you) and tactical board games like ludos.

Oh last bit is paperwork....make sure you get lots of disclaimers, have risk assessments prepped in triplicate, details of medical status of every kid, contacts, although it's a bit like sucking eggs me reminding you!
