Well, here goes! This is me at the Romeinenfestival 2012 with the Roman smithy. I believe that when you get older in military re-enactment, it would be good to look at civilian impressions. I am portaying a ex Batavian auxilary who after retiring from the army kept his learned trade as blacksmith. Blacksmith tools are based on the finds from Mannersdorf, Austria

yes, you're right. I'll be 48 in two weeks, perhaps I should be looking for a trade...

Old soldiers never die...they just fade away!
48 is a bit young to be thinking of hanging up the hobnails!
I'm older than that and I'll be damned if I'll go down with out a fight! Wink

Quite so. Just think of Marcus Caelius, still going strong at 53... Confusedmile:

Frankly, I'm still portaying a soldier even though I am now 60 years old. I'm helped a bit that most people say that I don't look my age-supposedly I look younger. However, I also describe myself as an evocatus, who was asked by his centurion to stay on. It is useful to explain that I will only get one (1) retirement payout when I do decide to get out of the army, not my first 20 years retirement payout + more.

I do like seeing civilian impressions. Rounds out the Roman world. I enjoy seeing civilian impressions in many different eras!
