RAT Conference 2012
#16
I would organize it again, but would soon need a decision, say in the next four weeks, so that I could start arranging everything.
I checked, all the museums are open, then. If possible, I also could arrange a visit to an excavation site (of course depending on the weather...)
For me: I´d love to go to Ljubljana, but it would probably be too expensive for me. And: Are there any RATers there?

I would think a place Like Mainz would be an awesome choice in Germany, but that only because I want to visit it one day!8)

Well, the last one before York was at Mainz, so I think that location wouldn't be suitable for now...

Or Cannes, where the new Musee de Mougins has just opened with over 100 classical helmets in its armoury alone....with militaria, marbles, and modern work inspired by classical art. more details here http://www.mouginsmusee.com/index.asp

If Ljubljana will be the choice. This is the program we are going to propose.

Quick tour of Ljubljana, focusing on the remains of Emona. Maybe some archeological site if will be open. Restoration center (I hope some interesting finds will be in the process).
Visit at the National museum and the City museum.
Tour on part of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0If7iRSR-dM) with stops at Smihel pod Nanosom(article on pila in one of the last AW), Ad Pirum(Hrusica) and Lanisce. Lunch or diner at the guesthouse at Hrusica. Lectures.

Well, I think we should continue and bring this to the next stage. Untill now the following proposals are made (organiser within brackets)

Ljubljana (Tormenta/Miha)
Regensburg (Christian)
Cannes (???)
Ravenna (???)

Well, I like them all, and I think Cannes and Ravenna are both expensive and we need someone local to organise and get some locals joining as well. So I would still vote for either Ljubljana and Regensburg, where my personal choose would be Ljubljana, as I think Regensburg is more logic to visit in a 'normal trip'. Of course we can also start planning two years in advance and make it Ljubljana in 2012 and Regensburg in 2013?

Any thoughts about the timeframe? It was in the afterseason always, and last time we shifted to pre-season. First weekend of february again?

After writing to Christian, we both agree on a poll for decide the place, but I think that Kai also mentioned Berlin for the conference.
When thinking about the program I used as a reference the first weekend of February, all the places mentioned in my previous post are practically on the road, in case of a heavy snow fall, or other bad weather(experience from previous years showed, that is impossible to know what is going to happen in the next winter-temperature from -20°C to +18°C or no snow at all to 70cm of it).The conference in Ljubljana can be prepared in any time you think is more appropriate, after the decision will be done, I will make a few suggestions.
We made the prepositions(I hope Kai will also post something), now is up to the RATers to decide the destination or at least comment it.

Comment: If Ljubljana will be the choice, it would be an interesting place to hold it!

Sorry to disappoint you, it seems that someone built some wall called Claustra Alpium Iuliarum , that is preventing the mediterranean climate to reach Ljubljana
The tour goes also on the western part of the wall so there can be mediterranean influence, especially in Vipava valley near river Vipava(roman Frigidus - supposed battle between Theodosius and Eugenius in 394)

Any of the above sound great, or Berlin, or anywhere in Europe in fact. Big Grin
As long as there is some history to view and some pubs nearby, I'd be happy!

It will be nice to let someone else do the organising this time!

I've just got back from a trip to Oxford. How about Oxford in 2013! Pubs, bookshops, lecture rooms, museums and good accomodation.

Hi all,
any decision yet? Some new preferences?
In the meantime I received some good signs from the Slovenian national museum. They are prepared to help in some issues.
In my case I hope, that the decision can be made before everyone in Ljubljana escape to their vacations(from mid July onward).
