October 5, 456 AD: Battle of the Campus Paramus on the banks of the river Urbicus (Obrigo), in which the army of the Visigoths as federates of the emperor Avitus, soundly defeats the Sueves. The coalition (the army also includes Franks as well as the Burgundian kings Gundiod and Chilperic) rout the Sueves and their king Rechiarius is taken prisoner.

October 5, 578 AD: Death of the emperor Flavius Justinus Junior Augustus (Justin II, c. 520 – 5 October 578, emperor 565 - 578). During his reign, the Lombrard overran the recently pacified Italian peninsula, the Avars crossed the Danube and the Sassanid Persians defeated the Romans during two campaigns, overrunning Syria. In his later years, Justin went mad. He raised his general Tiberius to be Caesar in December 574 and withdrew into retirement. According to John of Ephesus, as Justin II slipped into the unbridled madness of his final days he was pulled through the palace on a wheeled throne, biting attendants as he passed. Tiberius and Justin's wife Sohia ruled as regents for a year, and after Justin's death in 578, Tiberius succeeded him as Tiberius II Constantine.

October 8, 316 AD: Constantine, despite being outnumbered, defeats Licinius near Cibalae in Pannonia. After a long excchange of missiles, the main bodies of the armies met in close combat. A fierce hand-to-hand battle began until, late in the day, Constantine personally leads a cavalry charge from the right wing. The charge broke Licinius' ranks. It is reported that as many as 20,000 of Licinius' troops were killed during the battle. The cavalry of the defeated army accompanied Licinius when he fled the field under the cover of darkness.
