Hello!!

I'm working in improve Legio Prima Germanica cavalry section, and so i have to work with new horses.

I have a doubt. It's correct to use a Percheron as a roman horse? I have acces to one of them and it's very easy to ride and don't panick with anything. It's 1'50 tall, but it's very heavy: 900 kg...

Wellllll...Percherons are rekowned for their excellent temperament but are classed as draft animals these days. NO reason why you can't ride them, however, and there are one ot two part breds being competed in dressage events in the UK.

Lovely horses, but may not add to the authenticity of your equipment (Personally I am not that bothered about height as I am in the minority of 14.2hh+ size of horses...but that's another argument for elsewhere!) but they would certainly be classed as Heavy Cavalry Horses and not the nippiest of things for scouting!

Good luck with the horse though and pictures of you together are eagerly anticipated!

Percherons were war horses once, and I suspect it would take a good length of steel to stop one. But it is hard to imagine a similar Roman horse.

For two events last year we used a Percheron crossed with an Appaloosa. The mare had a lovely temperament, good speed, and looked like a hippo.

The rider isn't large, and the horse is around 14.2

I really need to spend much more time with Cookie. He is from a Welsh Mountain Pony and an Irish cob, bred to be a hunting cob. At 14.3 I feel I am riding a giant. He has a good turn of speed, seems very sensitive and I am growing to like him.

True, but the horse looks pretty large when she isn't pregnant!

I think finding Roman style horses is now harder than finding Roman saddles. We have a couple of new small Roman types due at the yard but I don't know what they will be like as yet.
