Recreating a Greek Cavalryman
#91
The photos were a publicity shoot for the Bedford Water Festival next year.

http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat.html?fu...&id=287615

East Yorkshire was cold with a bitting wind.

The field was wet and muddy and here I am looking for a dry bit. It rained.

But some of the photos were good.

So very good. I'd better upgrade both my impression and my horsemanship before I serve with you...

A Scyth and a Greek cavalryman......somebody should write a book about that. Arrrggghhh!

Thank you for the comments, I suspect somewhat undeserved. But in case we put too many people off, riding as a Greek is very achievable. Kit could really just be a tunic and cloak. Weapons could really just be a couple of javelins. Just simple heads and decent shafts.

In terms of helmets an Illyrian, Pilos and Boeotian would just about span everything from Marathon to Alexander.

In terms of riding I suspect many of us could manage a simple straight line, throwing a couple of javelins on the way. Many cavalry shows are based on the riders doing simple straight lines. No expensive saddles are needed.

You could finish up with a very creditable interpretation of this, without too much effort.

We tried to be sensible yesterday, but finished up racing around in the wet! It was good fun.

I thought the leading figure on that vase was flipping the bird at the other rider at first glance!
Well, I know I can get a horse to gallop in a straight line....

I believe that a creditable Archaic Athenian Hippeis might be naked with a Chalmys, 2 javelins and a ptasos hat...

The thing is, once you buy and feed the horse, the cost of the rest of the kit isn't that high...

Steven Pressfield did after a fashion.

Last of the Amazons!

An excellent book, with a slight hint of mythology thrown in too.

Gaius, in this case I suspect you will find that John was referring to Christian Cameron's Tyrant series Wink

I'd like to second Christian's comment on the scyth kit... Outstanding!

Hi Stefanos,

That is a good picture. Could you tell us a bit more about it? The riders kit is certainly minimal, is he a member of your group or an interested rider?

Best wishes

We done several reconstructions with this very cooperative horse.

The partisipants are all from Koryvantes group in Biskupin - Poland September 2011.

The rider had his archery and riding instruction from the Hellenic horseback archery society.

We were lucky and the horses had been trained by master Lagios Kassai last year.
Thats why we

We demonstrated Thracian horse archer vs hoplites in photo.

Sogdian vs hoplites and Thracian prodromos -pics to follow.

Kind regards
