starting reenacting
#1
hi everyone im going to be making a legion reenactment group here in columbus ohio soon and i am going to be purchasing a "Imperial Gallic Type G" helmet yeah i know they are over used but they are my favorite ones and im going to be purchasing a Lorica Segmentata and i am going to have my grandma make me a dark red tunic and i was wandering what are the dimensions needed? i am around 5'8" and i wear size M in mens

also what are the supplies need for a caliga?

note my parents are not into history that much so im going to try and persuade my mom to let me get those since i love history and i would use them as "Models" to draw with and use them for props for movies i will make in my interactive media design class.

I've setup a HOW-TO page on making caligae:
[url:w3bcjzqu]http://www.geocities.com/legio_tricesima_cohors_tres/campusMartis/MakingCaligae/MakingAuthenticCaligae.html

Before buying any leather, work on the pattern. Making a cardboard mock-up is a good idea. Leather and thread may obtained almost anywhere, but unfortunately the only sources for hobnails that I know of are located in Britain:

[url:w3bcjzqu]http://www.armamentaria.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=19
or:
[url:w3bcjzqu]http://www.leprevo.co.uk/rivets.html#hob

You'll also need a few special tools for leather working including both a straight and curved awl. For a curved awl I use curved suture needles.

The only advice I would add is that you must not buy stuff to fast. I see you mention 'parents' and mention a segmentata. I bought my segmentata when I wasn't finished growing (that is my belly) so that meant after 2 years my segmentata became a little bit small for me. I don't know your age, etc, but take into account that a hamata is easier to 'grown' with you (to some extent). For tunic measurements, look at the wonderful 20th Legion legionairy handbook by Matt Amt:
[url:3k99z4xm]http://www.larp.com/legioxx/hndbk.html

Also, in your story I miss one of the most important items, namely the Cingulum (belt). Start with tunic, shoes and belt. With those you're already a slodier. A legionairy would never go out without his cingulum, so it's pretty important to have one!

Good luck on getting your kit together!

Have you gotten in touch with any of the various legion organizations within a hundred or so miles of you? They may offer helps as to what would be proper when you happen to go out in public with them. It makes sense. Can't play baseball alone: you need a team, right?

There is at least one group in Ohio, Legio XXII in Cincinatti.

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/groups.html

For a tunic, the measurement to remember is "LARGE". If it fits like a tent, perfect!

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/tunic.html

If you go with red, a dark red is much less likely than a madder red, which is a little orangey. Not an easy shade to find, but La Wren's Nest has them ready-made:

And if you are bent on forming your own group:

Good luck!

PS: So *is* "Marvises" your real first name? If not, the moderators will probably want you to set a proper signature in your profile.

They're not doing roman at the moment, but Celt/German. That probably leaves us in Fort Wayne, IN as the nearest active roman group.

Rather than reinventing the wheel, it might make sense to contact the leadership of one or more groups near you, and join their discussion groups, find out what's going on in your neighborhood, so to speak, and learn from what they are up to. Then, you can have a better database to make a decision. Chances are, those things that are common with, say, Leg V, Leg VI in S.C., and Neuraleanus' group in Cincy will be agreeable with many other groups.

Keep in mind, though, that the particular period of time will dictate what is good and proper to wear and carry. What's good for a Julius Caesar group will be very different from what's good for a Tiberius group, you know? A lot changes in a hundred years. Compare modern US military uniforms with 1909, and you'll get the idea.

Don't be too hasty (says Treebeard) to try to start from scratch until you know what century, what sort of soldiers, etc., or you may find yourself doing things over that could have been done a different way from the start. Picking Lorica Segmentata means you're more than likely looking at 1st Century AD, right? Well, then you don't want to buy a gladius Hispaniensis, even though they are a lot more beautiful than a run of the mill Pompeii. I hope that makes sense.

Hmmm. Well, the Pompeii gladius was found in, well, Pompeii after the eruption in 79AD. Caesar was assassinated in 44BC. That's a 120 year span. Caesar's men would more likely have carried what we call "Gladius Hispaniensis", or perhaps the style called "Mainz" (but it's more likely this wasn't invented yet), but not a Pompeii.

Unless I'm mistaken, Caesar's men would have more than likely been wearing Montefortinos, or maybe one of the early Coolus, or maybe a Gallic A. I don't think the "G" was invented in Julius Caesar's day.

Caesar's men would have carried oval, curved scuta, or some say the round top and bottom, but straight sided scuta, with a "barleycorn" or "butterfly" boss, and vertical wooden spines. The rectangular scuta came later, too, in Augustus' day or after that.

Research thoroughly, then you'll be happier.

The picture you show is the Ermine street guard, which portray the second half of the 1st centure AD. So that's also after Augustus died. More in the Flavian times. (and then your combo of Gallic G, rect. scutum, pompeii gladius and Segmentata will be correct)

Okay, maybe this sounds a little bit hard, but there still a lot to learn and to choose. That's no problem. We all started once, where enthusiastic, etc. Now, we want to prevent others from making the same mistakes we made, and that was mainly buy stuff to fast. (without proper knowledge and research). I mean, having to replace a helmet which doesn't fit your own 'requirements' anymore is more expensive then save some more money at first and buy the right one directly. So, try to find a nearby group, and as you still want to start one on your own, start with deciding which period, which part of the empire (so which legion (if you want to portray a particular legion)). Then start looking how soldiers of that period whould have looked like and buy some gear.
