I haven´t seen any other one decorated in this way, by round headed hobnails of silver and/or bronze (well, I haven´t seen many seax scabbards before, too :? )

Also, the way of suspending it it´s quite a puzzle for me. it has a greenish little loop near the end, but nothing more to make it clear... :?

I think it's too big to be used in the way of the picture.

What about to wear it at your back, (en la espalda)? Probably with another ring (lost) in the mouth or near . It can explain the lower position of the ring preserved.

Middle 8th century, I think.

The four silver bands have half tear shape, so they will be seen only from one side. the "hobnails"/ Tascheles/tachuelas have the point bended inwards, as if after going through the leather/wood, they were bent to not harm the wearer of the weapon.

I will made more photos tomorrow to show this... :roll:

If anyone with more knowledge of German than me :oops: can read the last paragraph of the explanation (the pic with the drawing) will confirm this...and some more things I don´t understand :?

I know that it´s too late for being "roman" but...where I was going to ask those questions otherwise :wink:

Very nice scabbard.

Haven't seen such an example before.
The other ones i've seen were only fragements of leather, wood, and pieces of metal or completly gone.

How was it found in the grave of the person.
Laying at his left or his right side.
Any pictures of the scabbard in situ?
What are the dimensions of the saex?

Garrelt there is I think some 5th-6th AD? examples I have Saxon, but not as ornate but follow this style I will post if I can remember which book they are in

Do you mean Sheats and scabbards in england from 400ad-1100ad by Esther Cameron (BAR report)?
I already have that at home.
Also about 1.5mtr of bookshelf filled only with books and excavation reports about Merovingian/Frankish material.
But extra info is always welcome.

I also want to ask for more information to the museum (and yes, the drawings of the grave, and so...)

But seems that I, as I´m not Archeology or History "student" I will find some difficulties being allowed to have that info...
At least ,that was my impression yesterday, after a brief telephonic call to the director...:?
