Try Warfare in the Classical World by John Gibson Warry. They have a few Roman Galley layouts ranging from Republican to Imperial periods. .

Yes, Warry's book is your best bet. Lionel Casson also has a book specifically concerning ancient mariners, etc and that may also contain some pictures but I'm not sure. You can find both quite easily on Amazon (and probably the pictures too if they have the "Search Inside!" option enabled for these books). Good luck on the program.

Greek and Roman Naval Warfare by W.L. Rodgers is one of the classics. Originally published in 1937 by the United States Naval Institute. ISBN 0-87021-226-5.
This may be a bit dated, but it does have good line drawings as well as an assortment of photos. 524 pages. Chapter X on Roman Quinqueremes.

Ummm... if your doing stuff with the History Channel, do you have an in with the Hollywood crowd? Like maybe you can drop a dime on them that most of the Roman armor and costumes are horrid. Like a lot of the threads here go on about. Make your career by having them do something right AND save money by using people/equipment thats available?
Just a thought...
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

I have a number of photos of various Roman ship models on display in German museums, if you have an artist who could sketch them from that.

Email me jrscline AT yahoo.com if you want them, before 19 APR.
I'd be very careful with using the reconstruction's in Rodger's books. They are pre-Morrison and therefore include Venetian rowing systems, instead of more probable ancient world ones.
The most recent reconstructional drawings were published in The Age of the Galley, ed. by Gardiner and Morrison.
Can you be more specific of the time of ship and the timeframe we're talking about?
Greets
"The Age of the Galley" from a series called "Conway's history of the ship" ptovides numerous diagrams of both naval and merchant vessels from Classicla through Renaissance times. It's published by Chartwell Books. I got my copy through Military Book Club a couple of years ago.

The following was recently translated from one of the Berlin Papyri:

In Rome where I was born,
lived a man who sailed to sea
And he recruited us to serve
on a Roman quinqueremes

So we sailed into the sun
Till we found the Punic fleet
And we sank them beneath the waves
with our Roman quinqueremes

Refrain:
We all serve on a Roman quinquerems
a Roman quinquerems, a Roman quinquerems
We all serve on a Roman quinquerems
a Roman quinquerems, a Roman quinquerems

And the prisoners are all aboard
Except the ones we put to the sword
And the cornu begin to blow...
(Omp ompedy omp omp omp omp peo)

Refrain

[the rest is lost]
Oh man, this one goes way back... Antoninus, you remember Traj from AS?

Danno's Song, by Trajanus Ulpius to the tune of Garryowen

Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed,
But join with us each jovial blade,
Come drink, and sing and lend me aid,
To help me with the chorus.

Chorus:
Instead of must we'll drink good wine,
On board there now cast off the line,
Hortator, beat on and keep the time,
We sail with Danno for glory.

We are the lads that take delight,
In smashing the Ostian lamps at night,
And through the streets like Romans fight,
tearing all before us.

We'll beat the vigiles out of fun,
We'll make the aediles and praetors run,
We are the lads no one dare dun,
If they regard a whole skin.

Our hearts so stout, have got us fame,
For soon 'tis known from whence we came,
Were'er we go they dread the name,
Of Mater Roma in glory.

Instead of must we'll drink good wine,
On board there now cast off the line,
Hortator, beat on and keep the time,
We sail with Danno for glory!

Of course, I suppose that "beat on and keep the time" ought to be changed to "pipe on" or something...
