Finding a good helmet
#1
I've only very recently started to put together a set of Gladiatorial equipment (for a Murmillo) and have been basically unable to find a helmet that wasn't made by Deepeka. I'm currently going it alone here as no one in this state does Gladiatorial (or roman for that matter) re-enactment so I could use all the help I can get! If anyone could advise me on how to get a Murmillo helmet for reasonable money or recommend a maker I'd be very grateful.

Dang it! I forgot to ask; what is generally considered more authentic, bronze (brass) or steel helmets?

In which price range do you search a helmet?

The most helmets that have been found was out of bronze.

I'm curious as to why you aren't interested in any of the Deepeeka helmets, Argonaut. Some of theirs are really reasonably close to the Myrmillo, aren't they? To commission a museum style copy custom helmet in actual bronze would be pretty expensive, I'd reckon. Probably in the low thousands of US dollars.

I can probably spend up to a $850-$1000 on the helmet (gods know I've spent that on swords before). I'm fairly familiar with Deepeka's work (who in re-enactment isn't, they have rather flooded the market) and whilst it is nice enough I would rather pay the extra to get a properly fitted helmet to my own specifications and be able to choose which helmet find I'd like it to resemble. Even if I don't get one custom made and are able to buy something off the shelf I'd really just like to have more options rather than the same one that everyone seems to stock (ie. Deepeka).

I don't know if Hephestus would do such helmet, but you could always email him. Also Daniyal steelcraft could be interested.

Manning Imperial (Down Under) offers what appears to be a pretty good Pompeii-class myrmillo helmet for about $1000.00 AD. Sword and Stone (in L.A., Calif) has a superb Toni Felton chieti-class myrmillo helmet (with the U.S. dollar as low as it is, it might prove to be bargin--I got the thraex helmet from there for almost 33% off). Another source might be Christian Koepfer's market site here on RAT. He has access to an armourer who makes a nice Berlin-class myrmillo helmet (price unkown).
Good Luck

If I am able to choose I would prefer something in the Pompeii style of Helm but I guess it's really about whats available at the right time and price. It actually happens that I have known the owner/operator of Manning imperial for a few years and his work is fantastic, I have several of his bits and pieces in my viking age kit but unfortunately his work is of such a calibre that unless your ordering something small which he's likely to have in stock his back log of orders means it will be 16+ months before you get your order. If your able and willing to wait that long his work is second to none but well, I'm not that patient!
