The riders are: John, Jason and Mark

The horses are: Murphy (black, boss horse), Segunda (chestnut, fast) and Merlin (grey, grand old chap)

At least the notorious Sweet Ears wasn't there this time to take a nip when I handed up equipment to the riders!

Oh, and Lawrence's Samian is great quality stuff. Shame I can't use it in the Comitatus camp, but I still bought some all the same to admire at home. He tells me he has a shop on eBay.

Well Elaine and I enjoyed the event although personally I would have liked to have seen more participants. I have plenty more pictures if anyone wants to see them. I have sent Robert some of the Gladiator pictures and asked Robert who will "order" Andreas to reduce them for me!

I was very interested to see the living history displays from other groups, I did like the fresco display put on at the 8 th encampment. It does give the public a more balanced view of the legacy of the Roman Empire, ie, it's not all gladiators, mad emperors and orgies Tongue

For a local show as opposed to a well publicised show such as those run by English Heritage, I think they did very well with participants. Cavalry doesn't come cheap, plus both the early and late Romans were well represented. Gladiators were also there. Pretty good going, I'd say.

Hello Sandra
I was not meaning to be too critical simply expressing my disappointment that there were not more members, especially of your group Comitatus present. In the North west of England and North Wales there are very few large scale events so for me in particular this is the biggest Roman event within easy reach. The Ermine Street Guard attended the first two Festivals and Conquest organized the Norman festival. Both groups fielded large numbers of men and the public attendance over the week end at all these events was well into the thousands.

Therefore Looking at your Events programme on the Comitatus website I would have said (and you can correct me if I am wrong) that the Middlewich Roman festival was with the exception of Rockingham Castle one of your groups major events of the year. Comitatus has I believe a roughly similar or even larger membership than the Ermine Street Guard, the opening picture on your webpage shows at least 20 foot soldiers and yet at Middlewich your group only fielded six infantrymen and one officer!

No complaints at all about the cavalry who gave a very impressive and entertaining display but I know a certain person in another society who would have gone ballistic if that was the total turnout from the entire membership for such an event.

Sorry Sandra I just want to see a large Comitatus display and at Middlewich I was rather hoping I would!

I think middlewich was quite out of the way for a few members, me being one of them, and general bad luck. Sewerby hall is also a big show for Comitatus, i'm not quite sure how many in total, but there were atleast 15 infrantry, then plus cavalry etc. By the way, your photos are brilliant Smile

Graham,

I'm not sure which bits you're referring to Graham, but when I was in the line up, there were 10 in the infantry. I counted so I had an idea if we did the dreaded Exi (sp?) There would have been more on Sunday, when a new recruit joined us. I'm afraid both me and Kurt failed to turn up to the opening ceremony as we had what I can only call a 'time malfunction'! But we were there the rest of the day (wouldn't dare otherwise, after being given a special marching session in camp by Andy/Chaos/Caius  ).

Numbers might have looked lower during cavalry shows as at least two of us (including me) were utilised to supply weaponry to the cavalry ... Someone else had to drop out due to injury.

For various reasons, several of the usual line-up were not present, including transport problems. We're all human, and can't make every show. I don't think anyone deliberately opted out of Middlewich because it was in/near the North West. The M62 is always a jolly jape, after all

Sorry you were disappointed. Thousands of others seemed to think we were fine, judging by their applause.

Hi Sandra
I did look through my photos taken in the first display not the opening ceremony which I did not see either. However on second glance I have spotted someone lurking behind the big guy and Kurt hiding behind you!

The Guard members who came from Middlesborough and Ashford in Kent were not too impressed with the journey to Middlewich either!

I have been sending more pictures to John which I hope you will enjoy.

Best wishes

Graham.

Hello Ian.

As I do not know how to reduce my pictures so I can post them I have asked Robert to help out.

Your groups gladiator display was very entertaining. I also have some illustrations I did for an American book on gladiators including one trainer who hopefully looks a bit like Lance, as I had seen him at Prestatyn! Would your group be interested in seeing them too?

Please do! Especially those of Comitatus of course, but if you could send a few of the other groups, I'd be interested in them as well.

A great show of Late Roman horse! Your Taifali cavalry unit is the envy of continental Europe!!!
Laudes to Graham for those great pictures.

I spot TWO deurne helmets from Cacaius? Although I spot some minor differences, both seem to show the same provenance..

Why did John change helmets, btw?
I LIKE the kontos!

Are the others besides John wearing tights?? Confusedhock: I've seen Alan Larsen in bright blue tights in Richborough last year, and they don't exactly look the part... :?
