Augustan Gladius
#1
Some here may soon have seen it in the FB group: my newest version aof a gladius of the "Sisak" type.

Blade is of the soft-core-with-steel-edges-type, materials used are a mix of old wrought iron fittings for the core and ~18000-layer-welded steel from 1.1545

Guard and pommel of boxwood after the well-known Velsen find, Hilt of bone after various finds from Dangstetten etc.; pommel cap after various finds

scabbard is made from linden, covered in goatskin. the fittings are a mix of finds from the Magdalensberg, Sisak, Dangstetten but slightly modified

dating of the sword roughly 15 BC - 15 AD

overall length: 715mm, weight 870g

Pretty impressive, absolutely.

I got a polypropylene one for training, but nothing to do of course with a real one.
