My aspis is not completely authentic in its construction and along with my greaves, is the one piece of my panoply which I'm not completely satisfied with and will soon look at replacing. However it wasn't bought "off the shelf" and was made using ply, painted, lined with pigskin and edged in bronze.
One of Polycrates light infantrymen raiders. Armed with a short spear and falcata and protected by a (version) of the Persian gerron shield (itself a variation on the Dipylon / Violin shield, possibly modified for use on horseback), obtained while raiding the Ionian Coast.
He and his fellow raider’s are able to get off their penteconter quickly to subdue the town they are attacking.
Our group, the Rhesidae went hiking yesterday, less than a mile West of the ancient city of Mesembria, in the coast of Thrace. It was only three of us but we spent the day in the countryside. I cannot really call it a camp, it was mostly a barbeque with an ancient brazier. This thing works really fine if you make the charcoal and then you put it inside. I wasn't sure if i should actually make the charcoal inside it but i don't see the reason.
We carried our equipment (more than what three of us needed) about .5 km uphill where we had a great view, with the ruins of Mesembrial just visible behind the hill in the East.
Enjoy some photos

Thanks for sharing!
I love walking in Greece, it just always seems to be resonating wit hthe spirit of the past! (or is that just the cicadas?)
Must be great doing it in ancient kit!
The brazier is something like one I use for Roman re-enacting.
Small, and fairly portable. i think yours would be lighter though!

I had a long weekend in sunny east Yorkshire. The Thessalian cavalry under Menon were planning the overthrow of Macedonia. I fear we were not really posing and were really just practicing the Greek cavalry shows but I was pleased with some of the shots.

These really are great photos. And the authentic backdrop is priceless!

Excellent impressions John! The action shots are always a tad better than posing. Unfortunately we didn't have someone to take photos of us while we were really active.
I saw you re-shaped your petassos? Do you have any more photos of it?

You will laugh at this but we are having what passes for hot weather at present. Some areas even have what we define as drought conditions. The petasos makes a very sensible sun hat and everyone was jelous.
