The Herculiani
#1
To all Roman, salve
We want to inform you about the new late french/belgium late roman group called "Herculiani".
Our goal is to re-create the late roman legion "Secunda Herculia"during the period of Julian emperor, giving a good idea to people of what a late roman legion could be in the fourth century, it's to say a great one !
We are about eight persons at this time, and we come from french re-enactment group XXII Legio Primigenia from Bavay and the Foederatis.
We will be in Kembs (Alsace) on 29 and 30 may and in the roman days of Bavay on 03 and 04 july.
Every person interested by the late roman period and want to join the project (very serious one !) can join us by the RAT.
Thank you guys !
But Aitor, what is this roman event 2005 in Archeon ? Where is this ?
To give you more informations about the herculianis, we must say that we are working now on equipment (light and heavy soldiers, dished shields with herculiani logo from the Notiatia dignitatum) and we are training now on tactics, helping us with Ammien Marcellin's datas. As soon as possible we'll be working on web site for pictures.
And I can say you that we are a very motivate team !
Hope to see you soon on events !
Hi Pius,
I forgot to mention where Archeon is located. Archeon is an archaeological theme park that displays several periods (prehistoric, Roman, medieval), of which we all think the Roman is the best. Archeon is located in The Netherlands, roughly between Utrecht and Leiden.
Here's the link to their website. To give you an impression, I have here some galleries of shows from the last few years.
That 2005 late Roman meeting at Archeon is only a well cherished project. We'd have a big fun in case it becomes reality!
Alas, Alain, I shan't be able to attend to Tarragona by myself this year !
No matter how much I've banged my head against the wall, I've been unable to find a solution , enjoy yourselves there!
Maybe you'll be able to attend to our September festival (11-12), the 'Ludi Veleienses', one more opportunity to meet!
Hi Patrick,
Do you mean this one?

It looks cool even at close distance but it is not a true replica. The patches disposition and the patches themselves are correct and correspond to 4th century AD. They are heat transfers (like those on T-shirts) on cotton fabric.
Cotton was a luxury item in Roman times and could have been worn like the even more expensive silk by high status people (I'm playing the cohort's tribune), notwithstanding, what you would find usually would be linen and wool.
The tunics worn by the Foederati are handsome looking, but they are embroidered. The original patches were tapestry-woven insets, woven at the same time than the tunic. Some details were embroidered on the patches by the flying-shuttle technic.
There are some very rare to trace rsts of tunic decorated by the so-called resist-dieing process. I've aped that technic on my tunic.
The patches on my mantle are machine embroidered. Some day I'll rob a bank (a big one, of course, ) and then I'll order correctly handmade tunic and cloak. In the meantime, my friend, the only way left to us, late Roman reenactors is to choose which one of the availble shortcuts shall be use to try to look as authentic as possible, without being really authentic!
Aïtor is true, we all have to make the balance between total accuracy and our technical and financial limits. For exemple, it took more than one year to my wife to embroider my tunic.
It's not perfect, the embroideries are inpired by early byzantine mosaics for we are late, late romans..

But it looks good.
