Lorica segmentata from Caerleon

Let's hope that Pete Guest doesn't hand it over to Christie's to sell for 'im. Still, that way, the conservation would be done over the week-end. (Angry, moi?) :|

Well it's not gold or silver so obviously not that important. Be grateful you live in a country with a more enlightened finds policy, Duncan (even if it does involve someone called the Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer). I would like to think there are lessons to be learned from that helmet, but I doubt it

That was actually by way of a guilty little noise from me, since you are far more on-the-ball over it than me (still wondering what to do about the cloaking device surrounding the Stillfried armour).

Have you tried saying: "Beam me up, Scottie" in front of the mirror every morning?

I was thinking more along the lines of a Kobayashi Maru tactic and reprogramming Austria ;-) )

Sounds good to me! Mind you, wasn't this a "no win" situation - unless you cheat and reprogramme the computer? I suppose we could always enlist the help of Noorean Khan? Might be a bit drastic though.

Thanks venicone for the link.

"As if this isn’t enough, the room also contains some pieces of what we think must be parade or ceremonial armour. We have found a fragment of what looks like scale armour, but rather than the usual Roman scale this is made of tiny copper circles that must have been pinned to a leather backing. There is also a piece of copper sheet with a head in relief and we wonder if this might have come from another very expensive suit of armour, perhaps an officer’s, or from a cavalry parade helmet. The second photo shows these finds in detail and you can see the tiny disks extending into the surrounding soil."

Well, it's new to me, certainly! What I find remarkable is that the scales are still in place. If this had been found as a jumble of detached objects, I doubt that it would have been interpreted as lorica squamata at all.
