Ideas for an Armor Stand?

Here's the stand I made for my Greek linothorax, 40" tall overall:

Thanks a lot, Matthew, for the picture of the stand you made. I guess my comment that I should keep my lorica wrapped in plastic and in a box when not in use was not the correct conclusion. So I guess in your experience hanging it on an armor stand does not do damage to the leather straps?

As mentioned with my first post, I'm just trying to decide how to keep my armor for storage between forays to the classroom. From what I've read on RAT, keeping the lorica well-oiled is critical. I guess even more so with a lot of people touching it. I don't want my oily lorica laying on the carpet.

See my above post about vaseline. Oil will drip and evaporate off. Vaseline doesn't move.

Do you think that vaseline is the route to go even if I am bringing it to the classroom once every four weeks or so? I assume there will be some substantial cleaning associated with removing the vaseline each time. I read another post here that suggested automotive paste wax works very well.

I use my elder's bro wooden tuxedo stand for that.

That's a great idea. And it's easier than making my own, although the sample Matthew Amt posted looks like something I could do with limited woodworking skills and tools. I'm going to look online for wooden tuxedo stands.

Do you have any problems with the leather stretching like some of the first posts indicated, assuming you're hanging up lorica segmentata like mine.

Sorry, I just hanged an hamata and now a leather lamellar... but I'm sure it will fit perfectly with a segmentata. Even though I had to saw a protuberance in the chest area, add a rod on top for the helmet and remove a couple of parts... so get the simpler one you can.

If it's decently oiled and free of moisture when you put it away like that, it should be fine. Seems like a bit too much trouble to me, but then mine tends to get dropped in the corner and kicked for a week or so before I get around to hanging it back up again!

Well, mine's a type B, so the hooks bear the weight. The internal leathers are probably getting less strain than they'd get through daily use, and I haven't had to replace any of them since I built the thing almost 15 years ago. I did replace a couple of the shoulder guard internal leathers within the last year, but again, they were original equipment.

Give it a wipe all over with an oily rag immediately after each demo, to get the sweat and fingerprints off as quickly as possible. It never has to be dripping oil. Sure, it could still leave oil on a good carpet, so maybe just having a piece of plastic sheeting or something like that to lay it on? (In my little arsenal room, the carpet is not a concern!)

Vale,

Hello there,

While many may blanche at the idea, here are two pics, one of a seg on a coathanger, the other on a wooden stand!

The hanger actually rests the torso pltes on the floor, so hopefully takes some strain of the leather, and was only a temp solution due to lack of space (and a stand)
And also finally can post a pic!! Big Grin

I did make a simple wooden stand for temporary hanging of my lorica, but a friend came around with her (slightly challenged and aging) father, while the armour was still in pieces on the floor - he saw the empty frame & accused us of being devil worshippers and having a crucifix in the front room!

on themarket for some black candles now to go with it

Thanks for the photos and suggestions. The hanger looks like a good, albeit temporary, idea. The other photo of a display looks interesting. But the photo is so tiny I can't make out anything. Do you have one with more pixels?

If you go to the thread I just posted named "Hamata" on this forum, you can see my hamata hanging on the stand I built for it. This stand will also hold a seg.

I can send you a powerpoint diagram for the design if you like.

That's a great photo. Thanks a lot. Is the stand something you made? It looks like it is shaped in some way underneath -- almost like the chest of a mannequin.

No, it was made by the guy who made the seg! It is a T-bar on a plank! pretty basic, but does the trick! The thing under the seg is my subarmalis! Smile
