Roman fort construction
#1
Salvette
Our group is in the intial stages of planning a fort(small 60x60 yards)
We have the land picked out, and the layout done...now for the questions.
The soil is very sandy and the watertable can be reached about four feet down. Does anybody with construction experience have an idea on how to go about making turf walls in sandy soil?

Alexius

Dear Sevius Noricus

We are planning a permanent construction too, because we have already a place to built up this, and we are interested in exchange experiences and matters about this kind of construction.

I think in the next two month will have a scale and measures notions and architectural plans for this kind of roman wood fort construction.

Until there, we need continue in communication and exchange ideas.

What Canadian province are your group?

Best regards, Salve!

If you have plans for a wood construction, I would like to see them.
I would consider continued communications between your group and ours.
We have only started two weeks ago, so we are still trying to figure out How to do the trenching. I am not sure of how much help we could be to you.

While I appreciate your input, and your effort in locating this book, it appears from your statement that you have not read this book, nor are you familiar with its content. Is this a correct evaluation, or am I in error?

I think I'm going to buy a copy as it appears to be the only thing out there close to what I want. Thanks again for your input. When I'm finished I'll post a review.

Building the Roman Fort book... (referenced above)
it will tell you how much gravel and stone and wood and nails and iron
and... you would need to build a fullsize fort. It will tell you how many
man hours, and how much horsepower was probably needed, to get
the material, transport the material and use the material in construcion
of a Roman full-sized fort. There are a few diagrams and photos.

Will it be the book that tells you how to build a Roman fort?
Probably not. Maybe you might want to look for Peter Connolly's book,
or some of the other books that are less about archaeology and
engineering calculations, and more about diagrams, drawings and pictures
of Roman gate houses, walls and buildings.
The Roman Fort, Peter Connolly [amazon]0199104263[/amazon]
A Roman Fort, Fiona MacDonald [amazon]0872263703[/amazon]
are both fun and helpful. I have all these books in my library, and
several other related books, even though some are meant for young
children, the drawings are helpful.

Hi Rustius

If all you have is sandy soil and your going to strike water four feet down maybe a camp is your best option rather than a fort. Alternatively try and find information on camp or fort construction in North Africa, Spain or the Middle East, Masada perhaps, where rubble was used instead of turf. Most of the English language books tend to focus on either Britain or Germany and as pointed out above might not provide the help you need.

Thanks for the links

Salve Tiberius
I fixed that www link, sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello Graham
I agree, and the plans for a camp is the first thing we are looking at.
