Is there anyone here who reenacts the Hellenistic period (ca. 323-31 BCE), or knows somebody who does? I know there are some Republican Romans out there, but I'm talking about non-Roman at the moment. I don't know of anyone -- is it 'cause nobody wants to transport a sarissa?
(Gioi, I know you do a pretty good Alexander... )

Thanks Danno, I'm glad to let you know, that at least at the Festival will be 3 Men portraying Philip II Macedon, but for Hellenistic I dunno, I would like to see a Seleucid Cataphract in fulll kit  !
I know you cant go to the event, as you say before, perhaps next year?
PS: I would like to see you as our Macedonian King Alexandros!
BTW: Theo I dont think Matt is to early,it could be, but I see warrior in Linothorax in hellenistic period, only thing I think Matt has to do is replace his Corintian helmet for one later. http://people.clemson.edu/~elizab/Macedoniantombs.htm

Thanks! Yup, c. 500 BC was my goal. Considering how popular Alexander is in general, it's surprising there aren't more reenactors from that era. Would be cool to saunter through a multi-period event with a sarissa! I'd have to make that with a joint in the middle, though, to fit it into my house...

I think the length of a sarissa encourages people to decide against it.
PS, Gioi, when are we going to see pictures of your kit?

Hi, Matt there is someone in USA, with a Macedonic Alexander's Phalanx kit, thracian helmet but bronze musculata, who made a very large sarissa.
I post to Paul their site, & Paul had envited them, not quite sure if they had respond, I have to find that site for you!
Susanne, possible before June if everithing is going ok, I shal post the pic's, my helmet is ready or at least nearly finish, & the the armor will be started soon...
But there is one, of Macedonian descent who have his Philip kit almost ready, he was so kind to show me the procces of his armor, but I'm not allow to post any of his picture.
But he had told me that his equipment will be finish soon & will show me everithing, so I will ask him permition to post his posing picture, I hope he agree!

Very good staff Gioi.
The emblem on the hoplite shield was a personall design asociated with a Spartan hoplite from Skiritis (black faced archaic pottery).
Clears a lot of things on what happened in Cheronea and Kraniona.
The spear blade of the pikemen was not as big and usually more conical.
Kind regards

Zoiks! Two of them! That's cool, thanks! I do kinda feel sorry for that hoplite, unless he does some fancy work with that shield and gets in close, quickly. MUST get me a pilos helmet some day. And then start looking for looooooong poles....

Matt the picture can be misleading.
Two colums with equal frontage and the victory goes to the longer poles.
Assuming that we have two blocks of 100 men 10 stichoi-lines X 10 men each the Helenistic block (pikes) has 50 men engaged while the classic block (spears) has only 20 men. If the classic block cannot overturn a wing by using its supporting cavalry or light troops they are toast!
Plus Philip ordered the pike points to become conical and less wide that the leaf shaped spear points and I discovered by experimenting that their penetrative power was increased
Kind regards

What, ME make a pilos helmet? Don't I wish! They were one piece without seams, and I've never dished or raised anything like that before. My latest Bronze Age helmet is made in two halves, riveted together, and my Corinthian was made by Joe Piela.
Interestingly, there's an article in one of the old Proceedings of the Roman Military Equipment Conferences that discusses spun Roman helmets, and it mentions that pilos helmets are all round in plan and surprisingly similar in size. The author thinks they may have been spun, and the spin marks removed by the finishing process. That would certainly make things easier for Deepeeka or whomever to crank out cheap copies!
