against arrorws I have read about the very considerable efficacy of mail armor coupled with some type of subarmalis/gambeson. I seem to undertsand that without subarmalis the arrows may penetrate slightly. Check out

To your knowledge what is the evidence of the romans using subarmalis with mail? Was it a standard match, or only used against enemies with arrows. In particular did the legionaries of Crassus or even Antony wear subarmalis?
