Martin, you can find some information on the Deurne shoes in:
Driel-Murray, C. van, 2000, in: A late Roman assemblage from Deurne (Netherlands), in: Bonner Jahrbücher, 200, 293-308.
I cannot offer any help about footwear of the 5th/6th century BC (!), but perhaps this is a question which should better be posted in the Greek army section ?

Unfortunately, the information on that paper is as outdatad as that on 'Stepping through time' 
The Cuijk shoes hadn't been recovered yet when Carol wrote those two papers. They confirmed some of my theories and offered the much needed clues to reconstruct the Deurne and Vindolanda campagi.
Carol and me have written new papers for the Conference on the Deurne find that will be held at Meijel (Nl) on next March the 25th. Both papers, alonside with several more, will be published... translated to Dutch  hock: [url:3damtkid]http://www.medelo.nl/Verslag%20Avond%20Gouden%20Helm.htm[/url]
That will be the most up-to-date research on the campagi.

I only have a moment, but I found this link last night. It seems there's a sketch on there of a Krepis (just to the right of the number 17) that was on a statue in a museum in Syracuse Italy. Unfortunately, it's 7th century BC, but it at least gives me an idea what I'm looking for. Time to start scanning statues, paintings, and frescoes again.....

Would I be right in assuming that the papers to be delivered at the Deurne conference would be delivered in Dutch (which would seem reasonable, given the location of the conference)?
Unfortunately the languages I chose to learn at school were German and French. Therefore my ability to understand Dutch is probably better than that of a monolingual speaker of a non Germanic language (if there is such a thing), but otherwise very poor - far too poor to be able to make much sense of an accademic level paper and its ensuing discussion.
The date would be convenient for me and I would be very keen to know more about the Deurne finds, but if I cannot understand what is being said I would be better to stay at home with my wife , the cat and the mountain of unfinished projects just begging for my constant attention.
In any case, I suppose (from what I can make out of the conference website) that I would end up being the unfulfilled delegate number 81 anyway. Ah well - c'est la vie, as they say.

Yes I feel annoyed because I shan't understand a word of what it is said there!! :x
Anyway, I'll give my lecture in (bad) English and I'd wish that Carol would do the same. Our both papers have been originally written in English and it is a pity that they will be only available for Dutch readers (Dangerous statement on this forum... covering my head...  of course, Ive got nothing against Dutchies... no Dutch person, imaginary or real, has been harmed while writing this post)
As a bonus, I plan to read my paper dressed properly for the moment :wink:
I'll ask the organizers if I can put my English text somewhere on the net, preferably on RAT.com 8)
