Roman bull for vexillum
#1
Salvete,

I'm making a new vexillum. I'd like to paint a bull on it and therefor I'm looking for roman depictions of bulls.

I had the most succes looking at Roman coins. At the moment I have two depictions of bulls that I like a lot, but more options are welcome. So if anyone has a nice roman depiction of a bull, please post it here.

These are the two candidates I have at the moment, but I can't decide... What's you opinion? Which one would look best on a vexillum?

And another question:

What would be the best way to abbreviate 'Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis'?

Our current vexillum has:

LEG XI
CLAVDIA PF

Is this the way to do it, or are there better/more correct alternatives?

They seem to call themselves LEG XI C P F , which crops up on tilestamps and on this amazing plaque from Windisch (CIL XIII, 11506):

Oh, that tile plate is so cool! I was going to suggest CPF, since the group I'm in is Legio VI Victrix Pia Fidelis, which turns into Legio VI VPF on all of our identifying things. Apparently this designation has historical evidence to back it up, but I don't know much about it.

I like your golden coin bull. We are going to use a similar design. A fellow legionary sent me some pics of a statue of a bull, with both left and right views and it was really funny that the bull didn't look right if it was facing to the left, so I picked a right facing design that is rearing slightly. The movement in the thing looks better than just a static bull standing there. Here are my final two choices, pending legion approval... Good luck!

I like this on the best....

But this one is also nice.

I like the one on my scutum by Jorge from armillum!
