Quote:
Bit of a poser this, and i would be obliged for the input of any Romanphiles out there.
This is a part reconstuction of a pugio sheath copper alloy fittings from Bulgaria and there are certainly more parts of this sheath to sort out,but my interest is in the chain which was found in close situ.
It is very long, finely wrought and intricate.
It is also very strong.
It is much longer than i would expect a Balsamarium or oil lamp chain to be,and the end fittings look more like those you would expect attached to a sword or dagger sheath.
I just wonder if the legionnaire who had this pugio hung this off a chain rather than a leather Baldric,i can find no reference to this and wonder if anyone has come across this in a Museum or book.
Any input would be most welcome.

Yes i can, i'd like to say this was wonderful example of a previously unknown type of dagger sheath, but i'd be lying!

What you have here is a mismatched (albeit very interesting)selection of assorted odds and ends. I'm no expert, but these would appear to be:

2x Military belt plates. I have seen similar such plates from Switzerland, these were usually only partially tinned or silvered, to emphasise the punched patterns.

2x Scabbard brackets. Almost certainly from sword scabbards (although these do feature on one example of a dagger from pompei) These are likely to have been silvered or tinned originally.

1x Shield edging. Very common on early imperial sites, the lugs are so that the edging can be secured to the shield. Most pieces fit a board c6mm thick.

1x Triangular mount. ? maybe for military belt (ie at Windisch) or possibly lower sheath decor (ie at Xanten)

1x half rod/sheet fragment. ? not sure, the nearest paralell i can recall are the bent attactchment lugs for pick axe sheaths.

1x chain. Probably for an oil flask.

Although not from any one object, these are probably from the same assemblage, with a likely mid first century date. Some nice pieces here!
