Deepeeka balteus question
#1
I'm need to get a balteus to complete my impression and was looking at Deepeeka's AH 3869.

Would this be an acceptable belt for a mid 1st century AD impression?

I would really appreciate your opinions and comments on AH 3869 before buying it.

Thanks, Smile

Personally I think this one is one of the best of-the-shelf Indian belts.

We already discussed it here: [url:3rg5uymg]http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?p=129587#129587[/url]

Has it been refined at all since it first went into production? Because on the first page of that discussion we all agreed that it was way too heavy as is.

It is Deepeeka's best belt by far, but I'm still not entirely happy with it. My recommendation is always to get parts from various sources and assemble your own belt.

Yes ! The plates are dated to the Claudian invasion of Britain (A.D. 43)which is exactly where they were found.

Matt, it's a completely new belt and nothing like the RGZM belt you linked to.

Here's the new one, and very nice it is provided they put apron strap ends on in the final version: http://www.deepeeka.com/store/comersus_ ... oduct=5430

WHOA! That IS nice! How the heck did I miss it? Yeah, add apron strap ends, and it's good for me. Is Deepeeka re-using catalog numbers?...

Quote:Holger Ratsdorf does the same thing, wonderful work though he does do!

He makes them in the correct techique too, for about 45euro per plate (that's about 65USD  ).

And I was thinking about being wrong. Sad

Why do you think they are re-using catalog numbers? If I'm correct the old belts had the numbers AH6701 (RGZM) and AG3868 (decorated brass with Apron), while the new belt has as number AH3869.

Matt, i've seen the SOTW belt, the plates appear to be cast, and are heavy.

I'm looking forward to seeing their two new belts. The new plates are based on plates shown on page 108, fig. 1-3 and 10 of Roman Military Equipment by Bishop & Coulston. They look good.
