Animals were involved in almost every aspect of life in the ancient world, whether as pets or in war, or for food, clothing, sport, transport, spectacular displays in the arena or religious sacrifice.

Damn, I'm a year too late! I was in London and in the British Museum last September. No chance of another trip this year
I don't know what was happening there. I wandered around for ages, puzzling over why I couldn't find the Romano-British stuff until I discovered that section was closed at certain times. I'm sure it never used to be like that in those wonderful days when I worked and lived in, in a hotel in Montague St just a few paces away from the place!

But on the subject of pets, I wondered what animals the Romans actually kept as pets. Cats and dogs I guess, and I've seen a few sculptures with birds. Does anyone have any ideas of more and if the Romans showed the same sort of sentimentality towards their animals as we modern folks do or did they serve more practical purposes?
Are there any references to any Romans having a particular attachment to some pet?
