Yes! Some later Iron Age burials have included iron shield rims, although i dont think these went all the way round the board. I have never seen anything resembling this in roman military contexts, though that doesnt mean its not out there...! <p></p><i></i>

Take a look at the Varus finds, plenty of iron edging and reinforcing bars. although we can't be sure of their source some of the iron edging appears absolutely straight so implies a scutum.<br>

Also, from the same find, the Bronze applique lighning and the 'Upholstery Tacks' (Edging fastenining?) are all very interseting.<br>
