Knox Gelatin as glue
#1
Just finsihed an experiment using Knox brand gelatin as glue...

It worked!

Glued two ash slats together and the wood split when pried apart

Glued leather as well. Rough side to smooth and smoth to smooth. Very good adhesion!

Gelatin is an animal parts biproduct that come sin a fine granular form. Mix with water, warm is better than cold, and apply... made a paste and applied with a brush. I put the wood and leather sections under pressure while the glue dried.

It is water soluble after it dries.

It can be purchased at your grocery store in the "jello and pudding section". Restaurant supply stores.. have LARGE containers!

I may be using the gelatin to affix linen to our scutums and wil let you know how that works.

The two day experiment with linen glued to a slat was successful. Very good adhesion!

I don't see why this wouldn't work...the japanese use rice paste/glue as a glue for the scabbards and handles of katana...that has held for hundreds of years!

I have used this as a substitute for Rabbit or hide glue. Works really well
as a period fletching glue and quite useful to glue wraps when mounting arrow heads. You can add a drop of Copper Sulfate to it as a bug repellent. But that makes it a little toxic.
Never had a problem with damp weather but if you leave your projects
in a hot dry atmosphere the glue will tend to"come unstuck" as it where.
Many NA arrows in museums have the feathers lifting of due to this. Many have been classed as unglued until someone took a closer look at them and found hide glue residue on the shaft.

But Byron.... adding sugar and fruit flavor is NOT recommended. Draws ants.

"Hey, those Romans smell like strawberry Jello!"

"And I heard that they can eat their shields... all they need to do is add warm water and let them set up in a cool room overnight."

Knox is well known in the traditional bow making field as hide glue. Other good glues are sinew boiled with water, as well as rawhide scraps boiled in water to make glue. Certain types of fish bladders makes excellent glue, as well.

Remember what you are actually eating when you order a jello dessert. Ground up animal parts, of course sanitized.

Humidity and water are the real enemies of hide glues.

Bluebell bulbs mashed up with spit makes an excellent glue.

I've used it for fixing on fletchings and a few other small applications. It hardens best when put close to a heat source to dry and, as far as I've established, isn't soluble in water.
