Pugio (Private Collection?)
#1
Hello All,

I was recently thumbing through the book of Michael Feugere (2002 edition) and I saw a pugio that interesed me since it is different than the other legionary pugios normally seen from the 1st century AD.

The photo of the drawing (drawing by R. Forrer) of this pugio is in the book on page 127 figure 171c. It looks interesting with the mythological figures.

Does anyone have or know of any details regarding this piece (type of scabbard, materials used, silvered, tinned, the dimensions of the scabbard, enameling etc).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paolo

I am not sure which dagger you are talking about and do not have the book. Can you tell me where this dagger and/or sheath was found?

If you send me a PM with a scan of the picture I may be able to tell you more about it.

Crispus,

This is the one I showed you last year, with the various classicial figures on it. We couldn't work out from the Victorian drawing whether they were engraved or reposee.

Thanks Celer,

Unfortunately I do not remember the details clearly, so if anyone can send me a picture I really would appreciate it.

Thanls for that Tarbicus.

I remember thinking when I saw a picture of it last year that it looked highly unsual. I would expect Erik to know aboput these things, but still, I would like to know more about what is claimed about this sheath just in case Erik is making the sort of assumption I would probably jump to if I saw something so unlike what I was used to.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me pictures by the way.
