Vitellius day
#1
On this day 1937 years ago, (20 December 69 AD) - Emperor Vitellius was assassinated during 'The Year of the Four Emperors'.

Poor old (fat) fella!

From Jona's fantastic website..

Vitellius could have been a great ruler. Flavian propaganda and history have been unkind to him. The plain facts are that he was the first one to appoint equestrians in the bureaucracy, which shows that he understood how to address the problems with freedmen created by Claudius and Nero; and that the province of Africa, which had been governed by Vitellius and Vespasian, sided with Vitellius. Obviously, those in the province preferred Vitellius.

Legio XX supported Vitellius, too--apparently he was popular in Britain and Germany. A ten-course lunch, eh? You buying? I'm there!

This makes me want to dispatch the Atlantic fleet to Britain to fetch me some freshwater mussels.

Vitellius was also famous for inducing vomitting during a banquet so that he could eat more... most people would stop after a few courses, but not Vitellius!
