The Great Illyrian Revolt?
#1
Can anyone recommend a good set of sources on the final battles of the "Great Illyrian Revolt" of 6-9 A.D.?

I'm looking for anything we know about how the Illyrians fought both tactically and strategically, as well as how the matter was finally brought to a close.

Any leads appreciated! Smile

Books 55-56 of Cassius Dio's "Roman history" are the first primary source that springs to mind. You can find online excerpts of both books here. If I remember correctly Dio details to some extent the strategy of the warring parties, but does not have much in terms of tactics. Velleius Paterculus, in the second book of his History of Rome also talks in some detail of the revolt, but the only online texts I could find reproduce the original Latin text (if you wish, you can look anyway here, paragraphs 110 to 116)

Thanks so much! That's great stuff and I appreciate your taking the time.

I have also ordered "The Illyrians" by John Wilkes. We'll see what I learn.
