Segmentatas on Segways...
The Grand Opening of Anaheim California's
The Muzeo and its Imperial Rome Exhibit featured a black tie gathering, celebs, politicos, and a fund raising auction that included two segways.... Some of our guys put them to good use. It took Secundus and Iberius about 20 seconds to get the handle of these machines and about 2 minutes to get them up to speed, zooming this way and that, cornering, even riding hands free. They rode them up and down the aisles of the Dining Pavilion .. no lancing with pila though
We'll be doing a 3 month long demonstration at The Muzeo to include military displays, lectures and a variety of hand craft presentations to include forge work, bread oven, spinning and weaving, military medicine, engineering and more.

So that's what those things are called. Pila might be hard to handle, though you might try spathae. Training for mounted combat, you could call it.
So you're going to be there for 3 months? Surely not all the time?

Sean,
Where exactly in Anaheim is this located at? I grew up in the city next door, (Buena Park, famous home of Knott's Berry Farm) so I do know the area there well. Its a two and a half hour drive form here and only an hour or so drive from my in-laws in Victorville, I am going to have to go down the hill and check it out one of these times when we visit them. Thanks in advance!
Also noticed only a few of the Ninth at Great Western War this year (2 tents up, but no-one around when I strolled by), Have the numbers dwindeled so much or was it just because it was at a new site? I hope some of your boys head out to Estrella in February, would be nice to get to check out some of their kits and chat a bit.

The current
Ninth Legion is the sadly dwindling remains of what was once a vibrant dominant SCA warband. I am the senior cofounder but retired and left it to others. We used to field an average of 20 soldier under my command. I was told that no one of the 5 or so fighters of The Ninth Legion at GWW used scutums....
Estrella War.. Legio IX Hispana is planning on setting up a small encampment at Estrella 2008.....

Sean,
Thanks for the address. I remember when I first started in the SCA and would see the Ninth at Potrero. The old Varangian unit that I belonged to fought both beside and against yall at various wars. Look forward to seeing them at Estrella. Going to try to get down to visit El Museo the first weekend in November, but it's still up in the air at the moment.

Hmmm.... I do know of a Sir Doughal who lives in Windvale (Kingman), I don't know him all that well unfortunately, have met him on a few occasions through a certain "Lord Ian MacDonald" who was one of the commanders of our little "varangian" unit for awhile. I floated back and forth between Atednveldt and Caid quite a bit, so I mainly camp with a bunch of my old friends who are now a part of an auxillary unit belonging to Corvus. I have camped with them the last few events and those from Corvus I have met are a great bunch of guys. It's who we are likely to be camping with this next Estrella. I'll get ahold of Ian, and if Doughal in Windvale is the same one, I'll have him pass on the info about the museum.
This is gonna be a busy winter prepping for both the war and working on my kit. It should keep me quite busy. Again, thanks for the info and I look forward to meeting at Estrella if you're there.
