Good book after 420
#1
Hi!
Does anyone know a good book about the roman army after 420? Most books i read, concentrate themselves about the changes from Constantine and the IV century, and pretend that in V century everything was the same (with the limitanei and comitatio), but when we read the about the armies of Aetio and Bonifacio, the armies are made usually of foederati or mercenaries. So any advice?

This is good starting point for a interesting discussion on "late late" roman west army.

Elton's Warfare in roman europe arrive just to 420 (the last modification on notitia dignitatum for west) ; Elton make also a chapter on warfare and roman army in Gallia during the V century in the book "fifth century Gaul".

Two chapters on the argument are present also in the book "warfare and society in the roman world".
Interesting datas are presented also in the Heather book on fall of rome.

Bachrach has writed a article on Merovingian warfare in V and VI century (search on De re militari homepage).
Books on last roman generals: generalissimos of western roman empire, late roman warlords. Naturally the classical Bury's and Jones books.

This i dont know if has been translated in english:

Zecchini, Aetius
Mazzarino, Stilicone and last chapters of "L'impero romano"
"Each historical fact needs to be considered, insofar as possible, no with hindsight and following abstract universal principles, but in the context of own proper age and environment" Aldo A. Settia
