In all my translations of ancient texts, I hear mention of 'corn'. I also read that corn was unknown in the old world before Columbus. So what do they mean when the ancient texts speak of 'corn'? Wheat?

Even today, in many oarts of Europe, wheat is called "corn" and Maize or Indian Corn is the name for the product Americans call "corn".
Most English translations of Roman works translate frumentum as corn, if I recall correctly, even though it can be wheat, or oats or barley as well... sorry it's been 20+ years since I took latin, so I may be mistaken. Old age and all that....
