Hello all

A little while ago I took up blacksmithing (well beating lumps of hot metal into vague shapes) and I found that hot embers, colas and metal burns through your feet in no time and amuses the onlooking crowds.

This year, being the kill joy that I am, I want to stop this form of entertianment and wear something that will stop the pain, however I am struggling to find anything to make/buy.

My first choice is a pair of Calcai (spelling?) but I am concerned about their providence for civilians. Images of blacksmiths always show them half naked and bare footed, but this is often an image of Vulcan and being a god he was cheating and never really got the full human experience of hot colas burning between your toes.

Does anyone have any real idea what a civilian would wear on his feet 1st - 2nd Century AD in an industrial environment?

Thanks for any help.
Graham Ashford
