Olaf,
Who made the Republican murmillo helmet you posted? It appears to be a copy of the one in the Detroit Art Institute.
Primus, by the late Republic the leg armor seems to have been fully developed, but the manica covered only the forearm from hand to elbow. By the time of the Chieti relief it was up to mid-biceps and after that all the way to the shoulder, with a supporting strap.
Medusa can probably advise you about the tats. She has one on her back (I saved the pic to my gladiator file).

Both helmets are from Pavel Marek of
http://www.armorymarek.com/.
It is not a 100% copy but Pavel does good wortk if you give him detailed instructions.
The embossed Pompeji-Murmillo is one of the helmets he has done for my group.
We currently favor a craftsman in Poland however, since I have had some language barrier problems with Pavel in the past.
Like John says the Manicae of the Pompeji timeframe do cover the arm up to the shoulder, which can be seen quite nicely on the Zliten Mosaic:

Scaeva, left handed Gladiators, are mentioned in textual sources and can be found in Iconography, so this is nothing unusual.
For the Repulican Gladiators I will open a new discussion in the Combat Sports area tomorrow. If you browse my Flickr Galleries you will find quite a few depictions of Gladiators with open faced helmets and short Manicae. The Subligaculum also is peculiar in that it has a visible knot with a long strap of fabric hangig down.

Olaf FYI, most of your links in your signature don't work right with the html coding. Anyone know of some good online resources for Gladiators that might depict different time periods and the equipment worn?
Generic Google searches haven't gotten me far. I own a dozen or so Gladiator books that I've gotten a lot of information from... but I need more illustrations.

Yeah my signature got destroyed by the last Forum move. Have not found out where to fix it yet
Here is the correct Link to my Flickr Galleries:

I periodically search the new pictures uploaded there by other users for any thing related to gladiatorial iconography, But I have no found the time to commet on it a lot lately.
I also have all the pictures I made of items related to Galdiatorial combat from the Römisch Germanisches Museum in Cologne in these two albums:

If you dont own it already I would suggest you get the Osprey book "Gladiator" by Konstatin Nossov for a good and thorough English language reference on the subject. Keep away from the other Osprey "Gladiators" by Stephen Wisdom though.
Even though its in German, the book "Gladiatoren, das Spiel mit dem Tod" by Junkelmann is wort the money for the wealth of pictures alone.
