signum disc

regarding signum discs, were they simply fixed on the pole as is or did they have a wooden base on which the disc was fixed and then mounted on the pole ? answers will be greatly appreciated !

Actually, I don't know if one was ever found. We know signa mainly from monuments and coinage, so it's hard to tell. Most people seem to mount the metal directly on the wooden pole, which seems logical to me.

tx for the comment; I've never come across a rear view picture of a signum (even in the re-enactors one's) to see how the discs where actualy fixed to the pole.

That's how I did our signum for Legio XX.

But yeah, not much to go on! I tend to think that an attached loop or band on the back, like on our crescent, is a slightly more likely option, but the phalerae we got already had holes in the center so that's what I went with.
