I used four buckles just because it seemed to work best. The Colchester fragments contain buckles, hinges, and studs all connected to the mail.

I think four is perfect for attaching a doubling. It's also a really practical solution to detachment and cleaning of the main shirt if required, without damaging the leathering.
Looks impressive too IMO

If they're at a right angle to the horizontal lines of the rings (vertical) I'd think probably for the doubler. But, if they're in line with the rings (horizontal) and near to the edges of the hamata, I'd think side fasteners.

As many as 4 buckles? Interesting. I use 4 hidden leather thongs under the backflap.

do you have a picture of that method of attachment with the leather thongs?
I have a question here also in regards to this subject.
With the doubler attached using either the buckle method or the thong method, are the "S" shaped attaching hooks riveted or not riveted to the main body, of the front of the hamata?
With a proper Roman pattern hamata, would the back of the doubler be attached with riveted or butted rings? Mine is currently attached with riveted rings, but I am curious as to thoughts on this.
I also ask because I will be flying to a lot of events this year and next, and I am worried about weight distribution in my bags and avoiding additional fees for an over weight bag. A 5-6 pound difference could be the difference between getting hit up for additional fees or not, and the weight allowances have changes a couple of times since I started the hobby, and airline dependent.
Thoughts?

Hmm, wearing it is a option, though I tend to always be that guy that gets picked to be searched. Guess it would not slow me down.

Is it cheaper to UPS it to yourself at the location or digs?

Shipping it is a option, though I would have to go into my UPS or USPS account and see what a estimated cost would be versus paying the overweight fee with the airlines.
I think wearing my kit, or even part of it would get me more troubles unless it was Halloween.
I am, interested in the leather thong method mentioned by Sean and perhaps attaching the doubler with buckles like John did.
Course, I wonder if butted rings were used as the method of attachment of the doubler. It would seem that butted rings might hold on better and yet could be cut and replaced easily enough for maintenance on the doubler. I am guessing that from time to time the leather backing would have to be replaced. I just replaced the leather edging on my hamata doubler with a full leather backing of natural 2-3 oz leather still attached with riveted rings. It took awhile and even hanging from my armor stand and laying flat on a table, If I ever had to do this again, I think I would want to remove the doubler since I am sure it would not only make it easier to attach new leather, but cut down on time.
Thoughts?
