New book club pick: "For the Glory of Rome" - Andrew Brozyna - 05-30-2007

Hi all,

Jasper has gathered a small group of us to invigorate the RAT book club. Our first pick is "For the Glory of Rome: A History of Warriors and Warfare," by Ross Cowan. This will be a nice starting book partly because it's new to everyone here (except Ross, of course). I'm sure alot of RAT folk have already set their eyes on it. It's in stock over in England, but Amazon.com (USA) says it won't be available until early June. So, we'll hold back on picking a discussion date until we're sure it's available.

If you're looking to borrow the book from your library don't forget about interlibrary loan. Your local branch will can make request for you outside your area. See World Cat: http://worldcat.org/ to find libraries in your area that have it in their holdings. In this instance the book is new, so it will probably be hard to find in libraries for a while.

Through Ancient Warfare, make sure you get the magazine and newsletter to learn how!
50% off this and other Greenhill books (Conolly's Greece & Rome anyone...)

I got my copy of Ross' book last week. However, I think we'll continue to hold back on picking a discussion date. I expect people will prefer to order their copies until they can use that "Ancient Warfare" discount. So, "Hurry up and wait!" everybody.
Out of curiosity, how many of you RAT folks are intending to participate?

I would like to if I can find the time (new baby in the house, so that's a big 'if'). I already have my copy on order.

I've read through the first couple chapters. I expect I'll be done by the end of August. Rather than holding back on a discussion until an appointed date, maybe readers can post their comments as they finish. These posts will be waiting for you here, so each reader can join the conversation as they finish.

I actually finished this some weeks back, but been a little busy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Easy to read and full of well-chosen examples and detail. I like the idea that the ethos of the Roman soldier was a compromise - er no that sounds too negative - a dynamic tension between an ancient warrior spirit (hunting for glory and heads) and the demands of 'professional' military discipline.

Phil Sidnell.
