If you get the History Channel, do try to catch the show Ancient Discoveries: Machines II.
The episode was very fascinating and had many archeological finds of immense water wheels used for Roman machinery, aquifers, bath houses, and Roman water powered factories. Even a one man powered water wheel under ground in an old Roman silver mine; where the man would walk inside the wheel (like a hamster) turning the wheel and moving great volumes of materials.

They found and reconstructed one on the Thames a while back. was quite interesting, but can't remember the show it was on over here! :roll:

:lol: Can't remember that much to be honest, just they found the metal linkages and reconstructed a wheel for raising water........ :roll:
But was an important find I would say, at least to a numpty like what I am!

That picture above is of the one at the Museum of London, right? Do they still do daily demonstrations of how it works?

I saw a Roman grape press reconstructed on one of these shows. Then they filled it with grapes and tried it . Worked perfectly. It looked like a giant screw or a vertical vice.

That is the very beast! Shows how good my memory is..... :oops: Is actually a belt/chain of buckets running over a gear mechanism...I vaguely remembered something about manual or animal power :roll:
