Rhombus, help from musicians needed! - aitor iriarte - 04-16-2007

Hi,
I'm planning to make a rhombus to accompany our sistrum to enhance our sacrifice to Jupiter.
I assume that nobody has ever found or seen a real Roman rhombus but several groups use reconstructions.
I'd like to know, if possible, about the most commendable dimensions, length and thickness of the string and appropriate way of playing (I've seen it used overhead but I've read that it should be made go round near or against the floor too... :?
Many thanks in advance! Big Grin

Hi,

sure, only founds from prehistoric times that I know.

Well, post me your adress via pm and I will send you one during the next weeks. My husband is going to build a few during spring.

Regards,
Susanna

I just reconcniced one found from Greece that should be taken for a rhombus.
But is has four holes and looks more like an object for weaving, my oppinion.

But in ancient sources the speak of a "inyx" that some scientist take for such a thing.

Mmmh, if the three other holes were not intended for improving the noise and the size is small, it could be a tablet-weaving card :?
PM received, many thanks for your help. laus for you, of course! Big Grin

Now we must see if we are able to make it 'function' properly next Saturday

Any advice for newby, inept, would-be, rhombus players?

Yep, try different lenghts of rope.

Different movements, over head, in front of you and left and right.
Try to swing an 8, over the left and right side.

You can get different tones, tunes and loudness with that. Big Grin

Think you have to write an lying eight in front of you with your hand, so you have to swing the rope, and then you turn it slowly to every side.

*grrr* I need a web-camera.

Ah, I think that I understand it now! Idea
I'll suggest to another group member to try it: There is an inherent risk of damaging the 'family jewels' during the proccess...
Many thanks for all your help, again, I'll tell you on Sunday about the results!
