Vambraces? - Amalric - 03-29-2007

Hello, I was wondering, did the Germanic tribes use some sort of vambrace or arm guards? I have not read anything that either said they did or didn't. My first armor project was a pair of leather vambraces and I was wondering if it was accurate to use them with my early German kit. Thanks!

No evidence for it.

Tacitus describing the Germanic peoples certainly didn't think they were worth mentioning. He describes the dress of the people in quite good detail, but there's no mention of vambraces or similar articles.

Ok, thanks. I was afraid of that, but I thought that I would check to make sure.

Based on grave finds it is believed that Scytians used vambraces, presumedly of leather and (entirely) faced with splints of metal. See the upper arm defenses on the museum-made reconstruction below. The vambraces would have been of similar construction, as would be greaves for the lower leg.
