Military Camp or Villa - Wes - 03-29-2007

Greetings!

I am looking at roughly 10 acres of ground here in Missouri, USA, I have considered the construction of either a Villa or a semi permenant Leigon camp. This will be coming out of my pocket, and my wife teaches High School and I am a cop, if that explains our financial situation. Obviously it will be built in stages. I am looking for any and all documentation on either Villas and camps, layouts, layout, etc. I am looking at doing this completely correct, no modern shortcuts. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Respectfully,

Wes

I would do the villa - Neuraleanus - 03-29-2007

Salve fratri Secundo

As there is already a group in Arkansas building a roman fort. Build a bath house with a real hypercaust and we'll all join you.

i have the idea and pictures from Aquae Sulis or Bath U.K. I was already thinking there needed to be baths, I was unable to attend Lafe....

Re: Military Camp or Villa - Magnus - 03-29-2007

There's a good osprey book on Roman Forts that might be a cheap starting point:

That's not a good example...since it's expensive there, but check at a library, or some other book companies may have it cheaper.

What state are you in Wes?

I'm rather jealous of you being a cop...I'm hoping to get an offer of employment mid-april up here in Canada, just south of Toronto. Waiting sucks.

Re: Military Camp or Villa - Wes - 03-29-2007

I live in Missouri, but my State is usually dazed and confused! I really love being a cop, I worked for Trans World Airlines for 12 years, but switched careers after they bankrupted. Its great!

I have pretty much decided on buying the land, its right next to a large Conservation area that allows hunting and camping, so marches, scenarios and overnight type stuff on the "frontier" would be easy. I just have to settle on a plan, not so easy I suppose....It would be great for kids too, as far as an educational trip or excursion from some of the local schools. Plus, its only about 45 minutes to an hour from my house......

Re: Military Camp or Villa - Magnus - 03-29-2007

Well, if you knew someone with a back hoe you'd be laughing...you could rough-cut the ditch and rampart for either a small century sized fort, or a marching camp. Then just finish it with good old elbow grease. As for the buildings in a century camp, well, that is where it will cost $$.

This site has some cool info on them:

Re: Military Camp or Villa - Wes - 03-29-2007

Funny you mention that, one of my partners at work has a concrete company. My brother an I are going to build him a log cabin as a deer hunting shack......I see the potential for bartering! My brother has a sawmill, so lumber is no problem, and the mill is parked at his friends quarry....this might work out pretty good...I just need to learn how to make terra cotta roof tiles and water pipes........and find a source of clay...thanks guys...this is looking more realistic!

Actually the owner of the Villa dei Papyri is unknown, but there are much thinking that it was a country house of Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus. Consul in BC. 58, father-in-law of Gaius Julius Ceasar.

Re: Military Camp or Villa - Robert - 03-30-2007

Salve Wes,

If you are thinking of building something which you can give an additional function, I will be glad to mail you some pictures of reconstructions. Using Google should net you a lot as well, also check Mansio (great building, wayside state tavern). Just to get your appetite up for a proper rural villa rustica, have a look at the villa reconstructed by www.pansa.nl . These offer much room (B&B on second floor?), but can be build without to much hassle, being fairly straight forward structures. These villa did have several outhouses, such as a barn and a horreum. These were situated near the borders of the Roman realm, but can be found all through the Gallic province. Remember Romans build with rubble and slap plaster on for the high tone finish. You are very unbound to the basis material, as long as you get the plaster job right. The did the same for columns, mind you! You can use concrete piles with a good plasterjob and no one will ever tell the difference.

Salve and lots of luck with your endeavor!
