Fantastic, John, laudes. It looks to me as if you've got a solid contender for explaining the texture and ribbing on the statuary. I could only attempt something in loose weave wool because of the cost, but it wouldn't have the visual impact.

The slight overlap does seem to help a lot with the gaps, which I think is important.

I imagine you guys have chewed this one over before: I don't suppose, with all the leather surviving from Vindolanda that their are any finds which could be interpreted as pteruges?

I've also picked up the idea that they became less common in the late period, but I can't remember where - any thoughts?
