JSTOR - Tarbicus - 02-09-2007

In the last week alone I think I've seen at least two or three posts here asking if anyone has JSTOR this and JSTOR that. Every time I try to look something up the first page is dangled in front of me like a teasing carrot on a stick which I can't access yet, without a private subscription

It costs money so I'd be more than willing to contribute, but I think there are hurdles.

Should we discuss whether RAT can get an account?

Re: JSTOR - Praefectusclassis - 02-09-2007

Hi Jim,
I believe we discussed this before, for a short while. I'd certainly be willing to try, but it is expensive. It's a litter better when you're an accredited educational institution, but still bad. We could try and ask them what it would cost to get access to only the Classical journals perhaps?

Re: JSTOR - Tarbicus - 02-09-2007

We did discuss it, yup. Thought I'd field it here as a specific thread to see what the response was. My main concern is the time it takes for someone to sort these things out.

Specifying only the Classical journals is a good idea.

Re: JSTOR - spyros - 02-09-2007

Well since I for one would love to contribute in something like that. How would it work, any ideas?

Re: JSTOR - Tarbicus - 02-09-2007

No idea how it would work to be honest.

But when you see something like this (you need to copy and paste)....

I have that article (someone pulled it from JSTOR for me). Big Grin
Need a copy?

Re: JSTOR - Tarbicus - 02-09-2007

Yes please.

Re: JSTOR - Publius Nonius Severus - 02-09-2007

I am definitely interested. I have been teetering on a decision to join one of the organizations that publishes to JSTOR just to be able to get access, but I would happily contribute through RA.com if it were available. My heart sinks everytime I am doing research and I see a link to an article that looks like a perfect match for what I am looking for and then I see:

Quote:You are trying to access material included in JSTOR, an online journal archive made available to researchers through participating libraries and institutions.
Unfortunately, you are not currently authorized to access JSTOR

Re: JSTOR - sulla felix - 02-09-2007

I too would be interested - very frustrating trying to get access to decent research material out here in Dubai!

Re: JSTOR - Martin Moser - 02-10-2007

I would be interested as well ....

Re: JSTOR - TITVS SABATINVS AQVILIVS - 02-11-2007

Me too...
And, Robert please, could I get that article too? Thanks in advance!

Vale,

Re: JSTOR - Robert Vermaat - 02-11-2007

All who are interested in the article, please PM me with your email addresss.

Re: JSTOR - Historicula - 02-11-2007

If it turns out to be too expensive or just not possible to get JSTOR access for the site, would an alternative be for those of us who have access to band together and help others get specific articles?

Just a thought.

Re: JSTOR - Praefectusclassis - 02-12-2007

Well, I would be hesitant in saying yes. For one, you would be violating the terms of use, and I'm not sure JSTOR would be happy with RAT if we became an exchange area for their stuff.

Re: JSTOR - Historicula - 02-12-2007

Ah! I was unaware of that. One of the unfortunate things about getting JSTOR through an institution is that you never view the conditions of use.
