re-enactment in north wales - Richard Wynne - 02-02-2007
Hello...
My partner and I are keen to try some 1st Century re-enactment. My interest is the Roman Army hers is the local Briton arts and crafts. I had made contact with a member of Vicus but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a group closer to where we live, Caernarfon in North Wales.
Any advice on how we can get involved with be much appreciated.
We are planning to head to the Jorvik festival (I know, I know later period) and the re-enactors market in Conventry in a couple of weeks and would love to meet and talk to any roman/briton reenactors who are planning on attending.

Hello Richard
Well I live in North Wales and was a member of the Ermine Street Guard for nearly twenty years. Yes it did involve a lot of traveling made worse by the fact that I am that rare breed a non driver! There was another member who lived in LLandudno and whenever possible I would tie in with him but it was far easier when I lived in York for a spell, especially if I had to travel by train.
However 'The Guard' does not have a native Celtic Arts and Crafts section so you may want to contact LEGIO VIII AUGUSTA MGV who were originally based in Ruthin. They mainly did events in the North West but recently seem to be going further afield.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen. Its surprising to have such a wide choice of units to join, its tough to decide without a face to face. Will hope to run into people to talk to at Re-enactors Fair.

Hi Richard,
I volunteer at Barley Hall, York - where one of the Re-enactment Fayres is on, and I do Late Romans. Do say hello, if you're in there on Sunday.
Make sure you visit the Roman Baths Museum, York, as you should find some early Romans lurking in there! Graham is in charge, so say hello to him and the rest of the guys.
If you're doing early Roman, I would warmly recommend The Vicus. Steve Wagstaff and his partner Fiona are in this group, and will probably be trading at the Coventury market. Look out for their Roman stall.

And on May 6th and 7th, both will be at the Lunt, near Baginton, a recreated Roman wooden fort near Coventry.

Quite enjoyed our trip to York. Rachel was most enthusiastic about the Jorvik Centre but for me it was the Roman Baths, I could have stayed there ages. Not that I did not enjoy the Jorvik Centre, just some things are more fascinating then others eh?
I will keep an eye out for their stall. Like most new folks I have some cash to spend to get kitted out, and I am keen to do so, but want to avoid getting the wrong stuff. I have spent hours trying to learn just about helmets.

I think we've responded to your email.
We'll also be at York, along with quite a few people from the Vicus. It's like a social weekend away for us ! Some of us will be taking part.
Funnily enough, quite a few of us also do the odd bit of later period (dark age re-enactment). It's a shame you don't live down towards the south west as we have weapons practice (not marching about) on a weds night and sunday afternoon (with a different group).
It might be possible to join with a view to doing both roman AND viking periods .....
