Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - Alexandr K - 01-21-2007 Hi all, on page 91 in Bishop and Coulston (2006) is written, that a relief on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus at Gaeta shows a curved rectangular shield. Does anybody has a picture of this shield? Greetings Alexandr Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - TITVS SABATINVS AQVILIVS - 01-21-2007 Is it what you're looking for? I add this interesting helmet too... Vale, Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - caiusbeerquitius - 01-21-2007 I sthere a chance to get pics of all the miniatures of the monument? If nobody else responds (there are no good images on the web, although it looks as if Bill Thayer might have some: see herewhere there is a reference to some exterior views, unfortunately not yet linked) then I have recently scanned a slide of it as part of my program to convert all my images to digital. It is not my photo so I cannot publish it on the web, but I can let you have a copy if all else fails and you are desperate to see it. Very recognisable items, especially that helmet which looks like a Port helm, with even the occipital ridges clearly defined and well proportioned overall. hock: A shame there aren't any closeups of the body armour. Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - TITVS SABATINVS AQVILIVS - 01-21-2007 Just these for now, hamata with pteriges and doublings and (lion?) faced occrae: Vale, Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - caiusbeerquitius - 01-21-2007 Thanks, TITVS SABATINVS AQVILIVS, and laudes to you! Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - Alexandr K - 01-21-2007 Very interesting. Thank you, Titus. Laus from me as well. But the shields on these pictures are oval. Don't you have a picture of the aforementioned rectangular one? Thanks again. Vale, Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - Alexandr K - 01-21-2007 Hi, interesting, I'd say, they're oval. At least the one in the detailed picture seems certainly oval to me... Mike, do you write about these shields in "Roman Military Equipment" or are there also any... ehm... more rectangular shields? Thanks. I have a number of other reliefs like this, set up in metopes with triglyphs in between, from some other sarcophagi. I think it was a popular style of the 1st C. BC, and the shields are definitely the first century style, oval in shape with the top and bottom cut off. I don't know the provenance of these, unfortunately: http://www.antiquemilitaryhistory.com/i ... etope1.JPG 1st picture, from left to right: scutum and helmet (?), helmet and scutum 1nd picture: sword in scabbard with bow, scutum (?). http://www.antiquemilitaryhistory.com/i ... etope2.JPG Metopes from left to right: bull's head (?), unrecognizable metope, cornicen, bull's head (same as in metope 1?), man in tunic thrusting forward with a spear he is holding with both hands, a tree (?). http://www.antiquemilitaryhistory.com/i ... etope3.JPG 'Popanum' cavalry shield, crossed greaves (?), unrecognizable metope, scutum seen from inside with sword, helmet, (nude?) man kneeling and holding a scutum with top and bottom cut off in front of him. http://www.antiquemilitaryhistory.com/i ... etope4.JPG Bull or horse (?), muscled cuirass, helmet, man with helmet and shield (?), crossed greaves. http://www.antiquemilitaryhistory.com/i ... etope5.JPG With this one I'm sure you can identify all the items yourself! Quote:last pic, definetely a horse's facial amor.........!!Again, I have to disagree. Bucrania or ox-heads, are a very common feature on these latter-day Doric friezes from funeral monuments. Re: Scutum on the mausoleum of Munatius Plancus - caiusbeerquitius - 01-22-2007 Yes, right, and usually they belong into a bucolic context. Often seen on sarcophagi, together with garlands and vines. Also, that type of "horse´s facial armour" belongs to the 3rd century AD, so is quite anachronistic here. |
