Metal staples in scale/lamellar armour - egfroth - 01-07-2007

I am in the middle of a discussion on another forum regarding 11th century Byzantine armour, and a question has arisen about whether it is likely metal staples could have been used to fix the plates together.

As far as I'm aware, these were a feature of Roman/Late Roman armours, specifically locking scale, rather than the so-called "Byzantine" period.

Does anyone know how late we can date the use of staples in armour? Any specific primary source or archaeological evidence would be greatly helpful.
